With Carole on piano, Cormac O Brien on bass and Dominic Mullan on
drums, the trio continues their ever-strengthening bond spanning 10
years of performance and three previous albums.

THROUGH THE STORM continues the ecological themes of Carole’s previous
work. This album’s narrative combines admiration of swallows’ annual
migration with concerns of habitat loss and extinction. With all
original compositions, and a short field recording, the primary format
is acoustic piano, bass, and drums, with some Fender Rhodes, saxophone
and birdsong.

The trio has a more European leaning economic style, with a sound of its
own, shared commitment and beliefs, that is more than just playing the
right notes.

The compositions are kept open and simple, allowing spontaneous
creativity to shape each track. THROUGH THE STORM reminds us that we
share the planet with other living things whose lives are just as
wondrous and inspiring as our own.

“One of the most arresting piano trios in Ireland or the UK
today…...Nelson is, without question, as the refined language of her
writing and playing constantly reiterates, a singular voice”   All About
Jazz

Through the Storm weaves two narratives. The first celebrates nature’s
resilience and renewal, inspired by the annual migration of swallows
from Africa to Ireland. Their return each spring is marked by joy and
wonder, captured in the album’s opening tracks: We Begin Here, Lift Off,
Sky Journey, Through the Storm, Arrival, and Refuge. These pieces evoke
the swallows’ flight, the rhythms of nature, and the spirit of South
African jazz, with improvisation and interplay between musicians
bringing each moment to life.
